Which Type of Access Control Is Right for Your Building

If you are looking for a way to better protect your building’s day-to-day operations, you may want to start by assessing your access control systems. After all, access control systems are specifically designed to keep occupants, property, and data safe from danger. Access control systems also ensure only pre-approved personnel can access certain areas of a building. Whether you’re evaluating an existing access control system or developing a new one, it’s important to consider the size of your business, security needs, and type of business.

Today, we’re going to focus on the three most common types: discretionary access control, mandatory access control, and role-based access control.

Discretionary Access Control

The Discretionary Access Control (DAC) system is the least restrictive of the three types. In this system, the owner is responsible for determining which employee(s) has access to a specific location and/or access to company data or files.

For small businesses, the DAC system will likely be the best option, as it is relatively simple and convenient for the owner to implement. However, this system does have come with disadvantages. The primary disadvantage of this system is security vulnerability, as the employee(s) is given total control when it comes to setting up security measures for other employees who need similar access. For example, a key to a private office could be duplicated or shared without the owner’s knowledge.

Mandatory Access Control

A Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system is ideal for larger companies, where confidentiality is of utmost importance. In this system, the owner has no say in who is and isn’t given authorization. Instead, a supervisor or manager is responsible for managing access controls. Unlike in the DAC system, the supervisor or manager will identify all end users and provide these individuals with access within the determined security guidelines. This system reduces the risk of security vulnerability.

Role-Based Access Control

The Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system is the most popular and sought-after system amongst business owners. In this system, an administrator is responsible for providing access to employees based on their roles and responsibilities within the company. Having access determined based on job title allows management to keep better records of who does and does not have access to what information.
