  • How to Teach Your Kids About Your Home Security System

Installing a home security system is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure a greater level of safety for you and your family. As your children get older and can stay at home by themselves for periods of time, they’ll need to learn how to use your home security system. This is an important step to take, because the last thing you would want is for your children not to know how to handle themselves properly during an emergency situation. Below are some tips to keep in mind to help make learning about your security system a family affair.

    1. Approach the conversation with a positive, well-balanced mindset. As a parent, it can be difficult to talk to your kids about important home safety issues without feeling like you’re instilling fear into them. Just remember to focus on what your child’s role will be in maintaining proper safety protocols, instead of emphasizing all of the horrible things that could possibly happen to them.
    2. Make sure that your child is familiar with all of the different elements of your home security system. If you’re using a home automation system such as BeHome247, you’ll more than likely have several different security devices connected to your BeHome247 gateway; make sure they know what each of these devices are (e.g., keyless locks, surveillance cameras, etc.), as well as how to control them using the BeHome247 interface. In addition, make sure that your child knows how to activate the security alarm to call for help should an emergency situation take place.
    3. Role play with your kids so they know exactly what to do when it comes to properly responding during an emergency. Stage different safety drills for various scenarios (e.g., break-in, fire, etc.), and guide them through the steps they’ll need to take so that they will be well-equipped to handle an emergency. Make sure they know the quickest safe room to get to (and who to contact when they get there), or the quickest way to exit the home if necessary, no matter where they are in the house. Throw a couple of “what-if” scenarios into the mix to sharpen their critical thinking skills. While it can be tempting to think that this kind of preparation is a little overboard, practicing these important safety precautions will greatly reduce the chances of them panicking or freezing up should an actual emergency arise.
    4. Involve your child and give them as much hands-on instruction as you can. Make sure that they have their keyless lock passcode memorized, and that they can properly use the lock without any assistance from you. Give them the opportunity to get familiar with the BeHome247 interface for themselves, including how to activate and deactivate the window and door sensors. Allow them to work your home security system by themselves, and give them pointers during the process as needed. This will empower them with a greater sense of confidence and responsibility, and help them to be even more prepared to respond correctly during an emergency situation.
